What is Applied Behaviour Analysis? A parent's guide

ABA is the gold standard in autism intervention — but what does it actually look like in practice? We break it down in plain language so you can feel confident and informed.

Applied Behaviour Analysis, or ABA, is a scientific approach to understanding and changing behaviour. It is widely recognised as one of the most effective, evidence-based interventions for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and it forms the foundation of everything we do at Building Independence.

At its core, ABA is about understanding why behaviours happen and using that knowledge to teach new skills, reduce barriers to learning, and improve quality of life. It is not about making a child "act normal" — it is about helping each child reach their own potential on their own terms.

A qualified behaviour analyst (BCBA) begins by conducting a thorough assessment of your child's current skills, learning style, and areas of need. From there, they design a personalised programme with clear, measurable goals — things like communication, self-care, social interaction, and academic readiness.

Sessions typically involve breaking skills down into small, manageable steps and using positive reinforcement to encourage progress. When a child successfully completes a step — even a tiny one — they receive immediate, meaningful praise or a preferred reward. Over time, these small wins add up to significant, lasting change.

One of the most important things to understand about ABA is that it is highly individualised. No two programmes look exactly alike, because no two children are exactly alike. Your child's programme will be built around their unique strengths, interests, and goals.

Family involvement is also a key part of effective ABA. Parents and caregivers are coached to use the same strategies at home, which helps skills generalise beyond the therapy setting and into everyday life. The more consistently strategies are applied, the faster and more durable the progress.
